bizarre low-life melodrama
Sarno's first film reveals him to be a little shaky in the directorial department, but already producing robust, bizarre scenarios dealing with his favourite themes. There's the occultism, ritual and existentialism; early sixties anomie and a desire to escape a mundane world; covetousness, betrayal and guilt; incestuous relations; exploitation of the weak by the cynical and the search for power over others; and an overall hopelessness temporarily breached by lust and abandonment to the supernatural. This one takes place in a sleazier milieu than usual, but features no nudity or sex (and the stripper is in her late forties at least!). The performances, though lacking grace, are done with conviction, and the lead actress bears a striking resemblance to Joanne Whalley Kilmer.

Saptapadi is one of the greatest love story ever produced in India.
Saptapadi is one of the greatest love story ever produced in India. All the actors and actress gave their careers best performance in this movie like Uttam Kumar, Suchitra Sen, Chhabi Biswas, Chhaya Devi, Pahadi Sanyal and last but not the least Tarun Kumar. Set in World War II, the reverend Krishnendu (Uttam Kumar) runs a military hospital in Bankura. A drunken Anglo-Indian woman soldier is brought to him for treatment and he recognized her as his former love Rina Brown (Suchitra Sen). The two of them were fellow medical students. Rina's father agrees to the match providing Krishnendu converts to Christianity. Krishnendu's orthodox fathervisits Rina and tells her he will never accept this marriage and pleads with Rina to let Krishnendu go. Rina sacrifices her love even as Krishnendu converts to Christianity. Ultimately the lovers are united in the midst of the war. The film, based on a story by Tarashankar Banerjee, is undoubtedly one of the most memorable films of the magical Uttam - Suchitra combination.

Village-based Shyam, who lives with his farmer father, Ramdas, and mother, was always attracted to life in the big city and would run after every whistle-blowing train, much to the displeasure of his girlfriend, Laali. While Buddhudas would like Laali to get married, Ramdas does not approve of this alliance, as he finds his son irresponsible. But when Laali counsels Shyam, he changes his ways, and both get married. Laali then gets pregnant and gives birth to a boy, but complications arise; she loses her senses and everyone believes she is dead. Without even waiting for her funeral, Shyam leaves for a Bombay by train, not knowing that Laali would regain her sense after medical treatment. When he does not return, Ramdas goes to Bombay to look for him - albeit in vain. Years later, Laali's son, Munna, has grown up and has also taken to running after whistle-blowing trains, much to her anger. When other youths start to tease him about his father, Munna questions his mother, and not ...
There seem to have been many difficulties in restoring this film (on the DVD-cover they say it lasted two years, because the complete negative was annihilated in 1990).
The result may be interesting, if you like to see some shots of the Riviera in the year 1961. Otherwise the film is not very remarkable, apart from the fact that Jean Paul Belmondo appears in it, but only for a few seconds (you have to watch out for him), during a car race with mini-motorcars (the participants are not professionals, but tourists in a kind of playground).
The film is a love story in the style of those times, involving a middle-aged businessman (Wolfgang Preiss) from Hamburg (Hamburg in 1961 is also seen in a short sequence), and his young wife (Ulla Jacobsson) and a young writer (Hartmut Reck) whom she meets at the Riviera. There is also a wealthy Greek yacht-owner(a la Onassis, played by Walter Rilla) in front of the Riviera coast, with whom her husband wants to get in business contact. - The Riviera and a yacht in front of it was an almost-cliché ultimate dream scenery in Germany at that time.
I don't like to state that any film is generally 'uninteresting'(as professional critics may have to do), because this depends entirely on each viewer's individual web of associations while watching it. Therefore, I don't say such a thing about this one... by the way: I've seen one or two more interesting films by the same director Wolfgang Becker, in German sceneries of those times (Example: 'Kein Engel ist so rein' from 1959).

An underrated sequel that's worth a look, especially for writers
After reading a feature article about Grace Metalious (the 1950's "Pandora in blue jeans") in the Baltimore Sun a few years ago, I read "Peyton Place" twice and then watched both the original film and this sequel. I'd seen the latter in the theater when it first came out and it's funny what time and your own experiences can do to an old film like "Return." Having become a writer myself, I was fascinated by Jeff Chandler as the editor who tells Allison MacKenzie what it takes to become a real writer, not just a talented kid with an idea. Chandler's constant reference to a great editor (I suspect the man he refers to was based on a real-life editor) who MADE such talented wannabes into writers by giving their books shape and direction and Chandler's tutelage of Allison made "Return to Peyton Place" fascinating to me. Fans of the original "Peyton Place" will have to adjust to the change of cast, but this sequel has its own strong performers, like Mary Astor as a domineering mother and Carol Lynley, her beauty in full bloom and quite competent as Allison. I thought Gunnar Helstrom also stood out and this entire effort is worth a look.

It is a confusing movie. At its best ,it represents Ciampi's most artistically ambitious work ever.At its worst ,it is surprisingly muddled ,the story being very off putting for the average viewer (and for the 1961 audience?).Although Ciampi was labeled "old school" director,"Qui Etes Vous Monsieur Sorge ?" sounds more "NV" than any Godard's cinema Verite works .
One of the characters is "played " by the "real life " character .The movie begins with a spate of conflicting testimonies ,one of the persons going as far as to say that Sorge's story is not over and he is still alive and "working" somewhere. The Japanese speak their own language, which is a good thing ,but there's a problem:most of the action takes place in Germany and the Germans speak French;so do the English .
German born Sorge (His surname means "fear" "problem" "anxiety" !) was a spy in the pay of the Japanese .We follow him through the troubled times before WW2 and in the war when his ring reportedly changed the face of the war.
Extremely demanding, but sometimes stodgy ," Monsieur Sorge" remains one of the two Ciampi's most memorable works ,along with "Les Heros Sont Fatigués"

Georges Franju's best works remain his earlier ones:his shorts ("le Sang des bêtes)and his two first efforts "la Tête contre les Murs" and "Les Yeux sans Visage" (the latter's influence was considerable ,notably on Amenabar's "abre los ojos"(and " Vanilla Sky", its mediocre remake ).
"Pleins Feux sur l'Assassin" is "eyes without a face"' s follow -up.As you do not change a winning team,Boileau-Narcejac (even if their names are not widely known, everyone knows "Diabolique" and "Vertigo" ,both in the IMDb top 250, which were initially their novels) who adapted Jean Redon's novel in Franju 's precedent effort, wrote here the screenplay which is an original and which was never released ,to my knowledge ,as a novel.
It's moderately successful: Boileau-Narcejac ,as they did in "D'Entre les Morts" ("Vertigo") ,tried to mix thriller and supernatural .PLus Agatha Christie's whodunit.
An aristocrat dies but his heirs do not know where his body is .(but the viewer does, for the first minutes -Pierre Brasseur's short silent part- shows the old man dying). And ,which is worse, they cannot inherit ,because the body must be found ,or they would have to wait several years. In order to maintain their relative's desirable property, they set a Son et Lumière show up,based on an old legend from the Middle Ages: two lovers were caught in the act by the woman's husband and tragically died.(something like the old folk song "Matty Groves")
But it seems that someone is slowly doing away with the heirs ,and the culprit might be one of them. And the legend of long ago could repeat itself.
It is entertaining but it's a far cry from "les Yeux sans Visage". Franju was not to reach such heights afterward:his remake of Feuillade's "Judex" had its moments and both "Thomas L'Imposteur "and "Thérèse Desqueyroux" were estimable works which owed a lot to thespian Emmanuelle Riva.
Franju could have become the French Roman Polanski.

Welcome to Rheton, planet of the little people
I've seen Phantom Planet a couple of times now and is quite an enjoyable low-budget sci-fi.
An astronaut lands on the planet Rheton and discovers everyone on it are much smaller than him and he shrinks to their size during his time here. He is greeted with hostility at first but they welcome him later. He then helps them to defeat their enemies, the Solorites, ugly monsters with pig-like heads. He succeeds but the one they have got captured on the planet escapes and starts going on the rampage until killed by the astronaut, who also falls in love with one of the girls. The astronaut then goes back to his own size and leaves, and is rescued by another ship.
For a low-budget movie, this is not too bad even though it is unintentionally funny at times, especially the monsters.
The cast includes Dead Fredericks, Collen Gray (The Leech Woman), Anthony Dexter and Francis X Bushman. The man in the monster suit (Solorite) is non other than Richard Kiel, Jaws in the Bond movies The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker.
Phantom Planet is worth a look, especially for sci-fi fans. Great fun.

Review :
Small Bergman gem, a treat for fans
The movie was written by Ingmar Bergman, but directed by Alf Kjellin. From 1961, it falls between Glass Darkly and Winter Lights, so one can imagine how Bergman would have had great fun writing this, while not intending to direct it in that period. It is a fresh, satirical comedy about petty bourgeois covert romance and social barriers. The direction is quirky, fun, but uneven, with several dead or awkward passages. Altogether very pleasant though. The story entails the secret year-long romance between a small town teacher and a waitress, taking place at a time when the waitress already has a 20-year old daughter which no one knows who has fathered. Bergman fans are into a real treat with Bergman superstars Gunnar Björnstrand and Bibi Andersson, and also minor Bergmanians Stig Järrel and Kristina Adolphsson. Björnstrand is the teacher, sporting an improbable moustache (did he have moustache in any Bergman movies?). And male Bergmaniacs better braise themselves for the sight of Bibi Andersson as the daughter, at the age of 26, in COLOUR! Not wanting to venture into borderline sexism, let me only say that just her hair color is an incredible golden/pearl white that cannot really compared with anything else in the world, but goes extremely well with her immensely blue eyes and... well 'nuff said, you should be ready to sell a family member to see this movie just once.

Though every film on this list is supposed to have some kind of importance in the history of movie making, I have struggled to find merit in a number of the pictures I have watched. Some films, like Dog Star Man, were made from interesting ideas. While others, like Jack Smith's Flaming Creatures, do not seem to have any redeeming qualities at all. Flaming Creatures is a film like none that I have ever seen. It is perverted, trashy and important only because it helped define cinematic vulgarity.
Flaming Creatures was directed and written by the provocative filmmaker, Jack Smith. Here is a man that had no interest in entertaining the masses. I am not sure that his films could even entertain himself. He was a major proponent in simple aesthetics. He was the godfather of the underground film world, and he is credited with creating the drag-queen culture as we now know it. Smith was also a major influence on the films of Andy Warhol and the movies of John Waters. All of his films, with Flaming Creatures being the most incendiary, were shot under incredibly small budgets. But Smith was never worried about how much money it cost to make a movie.
According to underground legend, Smith filmed Flaming Creatures on stock film that he had actually shoplifted. It has also been said that he paid his actors in either gay sex or drugs. True or not, this still remains one of the most bizarre films I have ever seen. It is a parade of camp-queens, transvestites, hermaphrodites and prostitutes mixed in with the occasional flaccid penis or saggy breast. There is no noticeable story being told, but Smith had said that his work was showing you "a comedy set in a haunted music studio." I must have missed this, because all I saw was the showing of some very questionable acts amongst one of the cheapest looking sets I have ever seen.
If I have to give this film any credit, I will say that the images were exhaustively challenging for my poor Midwestern eyes. I was made uncomfortable almost immediately, and I would go as far as to say I was disgusted at times. Flaming Creatures is one of the most emotionally disturbing works in film that I have seen. But it does not frighten you. It uses music and absurd imagery to make you uncomfortable. You would have to be a pretty weird person to not be challenged by Jack Smith.
In one of the only secular moments of Flaming Creatures, we see an actress getting raped by way of cunnilingus. We are treated to the intense visual of a woman being held down and violated by more than one male figure. Of course, these men are naked and performing all sorts of "hand acts" on each others limp penises. This type of perverted sexuality becomes normality throughout the 45 minute running time. It is not an easy film to sit through.
Obviously, any film that features this type of rough imagery comes with loads of controversy. In fact, Flaming Creatures was seized by New York police directly following its debut screening. Along with Jack Smith, the film became a target of the infamous idiot, Strom Thurmond, during his crusade to end all pornography. Do not get confused this is not a pornographic film. It is a classic work in performance art. And though we would all love to pretend that this genre does not exist we still know that it does. And in terms of successful endeavors in the genre Flaming Creatures isn't really all THAT bad. I will never watch it again, but some esteemed opinions, like Frederico Fellini, hail this picture as a masterpiece in trash cinema.
Yes, Jack Smith may be an under credited influence on the Waters' and Warhol's of the world, but this does not make his films entertaining in any conventional sort of the word. This is the type of film that a pedophile would enjoy. And though I defend Smith's right to make trash, I also understand why the backlash forced him to withdraw from making films. Smith would go on to become a major pioneer in surrealist theatre. He worked in this field until his death of AIDS related complications in 1989. He was 56 years old.

Beautiful Performance
Absolutely beautiful. I loved every minute of this piece. The Color. Anna Karina. The opening scenes. The closing scenes. The concept. Whenever I think of Godard, I think of Anna Karina singing in the cabaret about her beauty. If you consider yourself a fan of Godard, French New Wave, musicals (although coming into seeing this, i was expecting quite a different type of musical, a more American version, which it wasn't) or just film in general, this is a must see. Godard holds a huge influence over todays films, i.e. Wes Anderson's work. I love seeing Anna Karina walking into the coffee shop, past the traffic, from the drab looking outside, ordering coffee, and leaving. I am so happy that Mr. Godard is still making films today, what a gift.
Tsuma to shite onna to shite / As a Wife, As a Woman (Mikio NARUSE, 1961).
Keijiro and Ayako Kono (Masayuki Mori and Chikage Awashima) seem like a picture-book upper middle-class family. He is a respected professor and the couple has two amiable children (a high school-aged girl and middle school-aged boy). But the Kono's domestic siutuation is more complicated than it seems on the surface. The children are actually the illegitimate children of Kono's long-time mistress, Miho (Hideko Takamine). To compensate for giving up the children, the Konos subsidize a bar which Miho operates. Ayako, interested in eliminating her husband's continuing interest in Miho, pays the bar girls to "spy" on Miho, in the hope of showing Miho is not "faithful" to her husband. Miho becomes tired of the situation, and proposes that she break off relations with Kono but be given outright owner ship of the bar. After Ayako flatly rejects this (not wanting to bear the expense), Miho's mother (played by the delightfully redoubtable Choko Iida) suggests that, for leverage, Miho demand the children back. This proposal infuriates Ayako, and she decides to sell the bar out from under Miho. Miho retaliates by telling her son (who thinks she is only a somewhat engaging but disreputable friend of her parents) about his true parentage. He comes home distraught and locks himself into his room; when his big sister persuades him to let her in, he tells her the truth in turn. The two children angrily reject all three "parents". Afterwards, Miho and her mother are seen packing up their belongings, in preparation for a move to more humble quarters and a new job as operators of a street vendor stall. Miho's mother nonetheless sings cheerfully as she packs. To Miho's complaint that singing is out of place under the circumstances, her mother replies that she likes to sing and things can't be helped by not singing. As the final scene, we see the two children in different school uniforms at a new school, it appears that they demanded to be sent away to boarding school so as to avoid having to deal (at least for a while) with the problematic adults in their lives.
The color cinemascope photography here ( by Jun Yasumoto, who shot Yamanaka's wonderful "Million Ryo Pot" in the 30s and films by Naruse, Inagaki, Toyoda and Ichikawa therafter) is superb. The initial frosty civility and subsequent savage hostility between Ayako and Miho is masterfully handled by Takamine and Awashima. And the mother-daughter interactions between Choko Iida and Takamine are quite delightful (including a number of impromptu "duets"). A Naruse masterpiece that clearly deserves to be better known.

Director Silvio Amadio is unfortunately not well known, perhaps best remembered for "Wolves of the Deep" (1959), and even that is rather obscure. Star Bob Mathias has a much more fascinating biography -- he was a two-time Olympic gold medalist, a Marine Corps officer, actor and Republican Congressman representing the state of California.
For movie buffs, the most recognizable might be Paul Mueller, who would go on to appear in a few 60s and 70s horror films by Jess Franco, including his version of "Count Dracula".
Anyway, that was all just to full space. You should watch this.

Whatever you think of Elia Kazan, he still is one of the greatest directors who ever lived.
I am not a fan of the politics of Mr. Kazan, nor do I have the least amount of respect for his conduct during the McCarthy era, however I cannot help but acknowledge that he is simply one of the finest movie directors who ever lived.
Splendor In The Grass is yet another brilliantly acted film, one which is so engrossing, so riveting, that by the time it is finished one literally feels out of breath. Now perhaps one could say, well Mr. Kazan has been blessed with a continuing succession of extremely talented actors and actresses. This is true, "Gentleman's Agreement," "A Streetcar Named Desire," "On The Waterfront," "Splendor In The Grass" each possess legendary performers. However! How did they perform at their best? Mr. Kazan. And if you ever hear them interviewed, those who are still alive, they all pay tribute to his superior ability to demand and acquire the best an actor has to offer. Natalie Wood in particular proves this in the film, so does the nascent Warren Beatty, both whom deliver poise far beyond their respective ages at that time.
Mr. Kazan also is a superior story teller and this film maneuvers with lyrical facility and poetic grace. I did not find one moment unnecessary, every image told a story and aided my descent into the minds of the characters. And you certainly empathize with them! You are drawn in and engrossed by their experiences. All of this is the result of a master technician and artistic visionary who had both the aesthetic genius and technical know-how to conduct one of a series of top-notch pieces in the American film landscape. A must see!
